Night pages: 66 - 84

In section 5 of Night (pages 66-84), Elie seems betrayed by God and cannot give thanks to God because of the suffering he has gone through so far. On Yom Kippur, many Jews fast and even though Eliezer is Jewish, he decides he cannot fast and decides to eat. As Eliezer is separted from his father, he becomes worried for his father's conditon and safety. Eliezer is later sent away and cannot see his father.

However, after a selection, his father has survived somehow. Eventually, Eliezer tells a rabbi about his lack of faith in God.

As Eliezer is in the hospital because of the severe cold weather, news that the Russian army is coming provides hope. The Germans decide to leave because of the news and Eliezer and his father decide to evacuate as well. Later, they realize they made a terrible decision because if they had stayed, they would have beens saved by the Russians. Little mistakes in these situations can be the difference between death and freedom.
